Gothic Architecture

When I think of Gothic Art, I think of skulls, the grim reaper, basically stuff that you would see on horror films and things that relate to Halloween. I didn’t know such a thing existed. I decided to look upon it as I am using some of it for my summative brief for university and I've been intrigued to read more on it.

From my research, Gothic architecture is a European style of architecture that values height and detailed aesthetics. Its main roots are French and this style of architecture can be found in churches, cathedrals and other similar buildings. It was seen as barbaric by the renaissance humanists. The word and style came back into fashion only in the late 18th century.

This is a painting by Melchoir Broederlam who was a Belgian Painter of the 14th Century. This piece of work is called Annunciation which was produced from the year 1395 - 1399. This piece was part of the left outer wing of the altarpiece made for the chapel of Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy at the Chartreuse de Champmol which was located on the outskirts of Dijon, France. This resembles something that could be on the walls of a catholic church.

The location of this image looks like life and death. The left half of the image is of a nice house/palace with a woman sitting in what looks like a cage. The cage could lead into the house as there is a door and a pathway leading into somewhere. The woman inside the cage looks like she is reading a book, possibly a bibe, yet she is distracted. The look of an angel in red could have caught her attention, she is dressed in red which could symbolise passion yet danger and evil. The message that could be portrayed is to be careful as to what we put our focus on as sometimes evil can be distracted with good. The colour of the house is pink, which symbolises harmony and universal love. The house may represent a safe place, due to its colour and how it's built. The other side of the image is in an outside environment. It is dull, dark and gloomy. It has minimal plants growing. This may suggest that it is an empty land that no one has taken care of. Could also imply that they could be suffering a drought. There are two people standing on this side of the image, they look like they are deep in conversation and the man dressed in blue looks sad. They may have done something drastic and they have been put there to suffer the consequences of their actions.

My perception of Gothic Art has changed. Gothic art reminds me of the Renaissance art period.
