Next In Fashion vs Making the Cut
I decided to re-watch the first episode of Next in Fashion to stimulate my memory and i also watched the first episode of Making the Cut so I can compare both series. Next in Fashion can be streamed on Netflix, whilst Making the Cut is streamed on Amazon Prime.
Making the Cut is an American TV series hosted by Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn. The Judges include Naomi Campbell, Nicole Richie, Chiara Ferragri, Carine Rotifield and Joseph Altuzarra. During the first episode, the contestants were introduced by the hosts meeting them in their hotel rooms. Their aim is to find “to find someone who can build the next fashion business”. By doing so, the designers are set challenges and by the end of each challenge they will put on a fashion show for the judges and the crowd to see. The winner gets mentorship in growing their business, $1 Million to help fund their business and get to create a collection that will be sold on Amazon.
Next in Fashion is a Fashion Design competition hosted by Tan France and Alexa Chung. The show consists of 18 designers from different parts of the world. Their aim is to “find the next big thing in Fashion.” The Winner gets $250,000 and retails their designs on the Net - A - Porter website.
During this episode - and throughout the series - the contestants talk about who they are, their brand and how they got into fashion. They also had to work in teams of two. Luckily for some, some pairs came as friends so it was easy to work with someone they had known, but this was an easy way for the contestants to make new friends. They are given a whole wardrobe full of fabric and accessories to choose from to help with bringing their garments to life.
In making the cut, they searched for the best designers all over the world and met the hosts in New York. The contestants were then flown out to Paris to begin the challenges. During the first episode, the designers are told to go out to explore the city of Paris to find inspiration for their first challenge. They take pictures, draw and overall consume what is around them. They also have to find and pay for their own fabric for their designs.
At the end of both episodes, they showcased their work to a crowd of people and a few celebrity judges. As I mentioned earlier, making the cut had 4 celebrity judges - Naomi Campbell, Nicole Richie, Chiara Ferragri, Carine Rotifield and Joseph Altuzarra as well as the hosts, Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn. The designers had their first runway event in front of the Eiffel Tower. With Next In Fashion, the main judges were the hosts - Tan France and Alexa Chung and each week they would also bring guest judges to help come to a conclusion to who they would pick to stay and leave each challenge.
In my opinion both shows were very similar in their aesthetic, but also had their differences. Even though they had to have only one winner, all of the contestants got exposure to their brand and will attract their customers.
