Power of your Voice

According to Al - Jazeera, “Black Americans are two and a half times as likely to be killed by police officers.” (Haddad, 2020) The same article states that “Between 2013 - 2019, police in the United States killed 7,666 people” (Haddad, 2020) The largest 3 states - California, Texas and Florida - have the highest number of killing of black people by police officers and in Minnesota, “Black Americans are nearly 4 times as likely to be killed by law enforcements” (Haddad, 2020) Isn’t this scary?

During these past few days, there have been protests around the world in support of Black Lives Matter. According to ITV News, “Thousands are expected to attend Anti-Racism demonstrations in several UK Cities this weekend despite warnings from ministers that mass gatherings are banned” (Thousands expected to attend Black Lives Matter protests across UK as public warned against mass gatherings, 2020) From recent social media posts, thousands have already joined to protest on June 3rd at Hyde Park.

In recent cases, George Floyd. A 46 year old male was killed by a police officer that kneeled on his neck for over 8 minutes and repeatedly told the officer that he cannot breathe. He allegedly had a fake $20 note which resulted in the police being called. According to Sky News, he was seen as a “‘gentle giant’ who was trying to change his life around.” (Mee, 2020)

Breonna Taylor, another victim to police brutality. According to Sky News, “a black woman was shot dead by police who stormed her home as she slept while searching for a suspect who was already in custody” (Breonna Taylor: Police killed black woman after storming home in hunt for suspect already in custody, lawsuit says, 2020) She was shot at least 8 times by officers. According to The New York Times, her mother states that “her daughter had big dreams and planned a lifelong career in health care after serving as an E.M.T.” (Oppel Jr and Taylor, 2020)

John Boyega's speech at Hyde Park was amazing. He spoke so much truth and was filled with passion. I love how we are finally standing up to what is right as we cannot allow inequality to happen any longer. I am personally tired of being treated differently and being pre-judged due to my skin colour. I love seeing posts on social media that are educating us about black history and are exposing the real truths behind police brutality.
